1-6 Clean the Rifle
Clean the rifle by removing any carbon buildup and lubricating according to
lubrication instructions. Make sure you remove any excess oil from the bore
before firing. After firing ball or blank ammunition, clean the weapon one time
with CLP. Under all but the coldest Arctic conditions, use only CLP to lubricate
the rifle.

Clean all other components. Identify any defective or missing components and
report them to the armorer. Do not interchange bolts between rifles.
Clean the inside of the lower receiver.
Clean the inner surfaces of the lower receiver extension.
Clean the action spring.
Clean the buffer.
Clean the outside surface of the protruding gas tube.
Clean the firing pin and firing pin recess.
Clean inside the bolt carrier key.
Clean the outside of the bolt body.
Clean the Piston Rings.
Clean the Slide cam pin area.
Clean the bolt carrier.
Clean the Lugs in the barrel extension, bore, and chamber.
Clean the following rifle parts lightly lubricating with CLP.
Clean the areas behind the bolt ring and under the lip of the extractor.
Clean the carbon deposits and dirt from the locking lugs.
Clean the firing pin hole with a pipe cleaner.
Clean the firing pin recess and firing pin.
Clean the carrier key.
Clean the outer and inner surfaces of the bolt carrier.
Clean the bolt carrier group, wiping the following parts with swabs and other
parts from the small arms maintenance equipment case.
Clean the buffer and inside the lower receiver extension.
Brush dirt from the trigger mechanism.
Clean the drain hole with a pipe cleaner.
Clean the barrel locking lugs and gas tube.
Start at the receiver and go through the flash suppressor, then remove the brush
to prevent dragging dirt back through the barrel.
Clean the upper and lower receiver group using CLP to remove powder fouling
in the upper receiver.
